Norwegian maritime and offshore company Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions (WTS) has secured multiple orders to supply its maritime protection inert gas generator (IGG) systems for installation on FPSO vessels to work on Brazil’s pre-salt fields.

The company will deliver a total of eight dual-fuel Maritime Protection systems to

Brazil’s national oil company Petrobras for installation onboard four very large crude carriers (VLCCs) being converted to floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels.

IGG systems are generally used on chemical and product tankships where a higher quality of inert gas is required so as not to pollute the refined cargo product.

The conversion of the VLCC hulls is scheduled to take place in the Estaleiro Inhauma dry-dock in Rio de Janeiro where the IGG equipment will be installed. The IGG systems are capable of operating on marine diesel oil/gas oil and natural gas.

Once completed, the FPSOs will operate in the deepwater pre-salt fields of the Santos Basin, 200 km south of Rio de Janeiro.

WTS will deliver the eight dual-fuel units between December 2013 and September 2014.

“We are delighted to be working with EEP/Petrobras on this order,” said Steinar Andersen, managing director for WTS subsidiary Maritime Protection . “For Petrobras, the equipment is designed to last for the lifetime of these vessels and makes extensive use of stainless steel to ensure durability.”
