The value of the contract is undisclosed, Aker said, but the equipment will be delivered in 2013

A Norwegian oil services company will supply a Chinese yard with drilling equipment for a new rig under construction at the facility, it emerged on Monday, as China emerges as a strong competitor in the offshore-rig sector.

Aker Solutions will provide jack-up drilling equipment to heavy machinery manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (ZPMC) for a new jack-up drilling rig of the 2000E design, the Norwegian firm announced on Monday.

“We are pleased to see Aker Solutions' competitive position in the jack-up market, which remains active,” said head of drilling technologies at Aker Solutions Thor Arne Håverstad.

The value of the contract is undisclosed, Aker said, but the equipment will be delivered in 2013.

China has been emerging as a strong competitor in the offshore-rig sector, boasting a considerable edge over South Korea and Singapore in the jack-up rig market. The country expects to boost its share of the global offshore energy equipment industry by more than fourfold by 2020, from under 8 per cent in 2011.
