Esso Angola awards Welltec contract for services in West Africa

10th March 2014

Welltec has announced that it has won a three year, direct contract from Esso Exploration Angola (Block 15)

Welltec has announced that it has won a three year, direct contract from Esso Exploration Angola (Block 15) Limited (Esso Angola), Operator of Angola Block 15, for the provision of conveyance and well intervention services including clean-out and mechanical manipulation.

Esso Angola is the operator of Block 15 on behalf of state oil company Sonangol, the concessionaire.  Block 15 was awarded in 1994 and the first discovery was made in 1998. Esso Angola holds a 40 per cent interest in the block.

The first oil was produced in 2003 from the Xikomba field, followed by Kizomba A in 2004, Kizomba B in 2005 and Kizomba C in 2008.  Planning continues to progress development of the remaining discovered resources on Block 15. The Block 15 developments are benchmark projects that set world record cycle times with the lowest unit-development costs for projects of this size and complexity.

ExxonMobil owns a 20 per cent interest on Block 17, where the first discovery was made in 1996. A number of projects have started up, including Girassol in 2001, Dalia in 2006 and Rosa in 2007. The next development will be Pazflor - project execution activities will begin in 2008.  ExxonMobil also has interests in Blocks 31 (25 per cent) and 32 (15 per cent). Development planning activities are underway for a number of discoveries in these blocks.

Welltec technologies and services increase flexibility and reduce the mobilisation time for key intervention operations compared to conventional intervention methods utilising coiled tubing or jointed pipe. Other benefits include a reduction in the number of lifting operations, personnel and footprint, all contributing to improved risk management; particularly in environmentally sensitive environments.

Gbenga Onadeko, Welltec Senior Vice President, Africa explains that “Welltec, a pioneer and market leader of robotic conveyance and intervention technologies, is extremely pleased by this award from Esso Angola. We have provided services to Esso Angola since 2005.”

Welltec is the largest provider of tractor technology for conveyance solutions as well as the foremost provider of milling, clean-out and mechanical solutions globally. These technologies have been successfully developed and applied by Welltec for nearly two decades.
