The UK technology and engineering arm of a US corporation will provide automation systems for a new FPSO to be operated by a British oil and gas giant, it emerged last week. The vessel is set to boost exploration in the North Sea.

A platform of power equipment manufacturer Emerson Electric Company, Emerson Process Management will furnish BP’s new floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel with integrated control and safety systems, the company announced on Thursday. The move is part of a USD 21m contract between both companies.

The technology will include Emerson’s DeltaV digital automation system and DeltaV SIS process safety system, along with the AMS Suite predictive maintenance software. DeltaV’s advanced process control software will optimize facility performance, production, and yield, Emerson said.

The automation systems will supply a new BP FPSO vessel which is to replace the existing Schiehallion FPSO and form part of the North Sea Quad 204 project to access the remaining hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Schiehallion and Loyal deepwater offshore oilfields off the northern coast of the UK, North Sea.

The new 270-meter Quad 204 FPSO is larger and designed to produce 130,000 barrels of oil per day and 2.2 million cubic meters of gas per day, Emerson said. The firm also provided the front end engineering and design (FEED) on the FPSO, it said.

“We are pleased that Emerson has been chosen to design and implement the integrated control and safety systems for this new FPSO,” said Steve Sonnenberg, president of Emerson Process Management. “This is another large-scale project that we have been awarded and is a continuation of the long-standing and trusting relationship that exists between our companies."
