Learn more about aluminium and its strengths offshore at OTC 2018

30th April 2018

Offshore aluminium structures require less maintenance and last longer than similar steel-made structures, with no loss in strength. This week at Offshore Technology Conference 2018 (OTC), you can perform strength tests yourself and see the results with your own eyes.

5083 aluminium extrusions for maritime use

Hydro invites you to its stand to perform live tests of light aluminium and heavier steel under equal loads. Testing will be possible throughout the week. You will perform the tests on a construction made of two beams – one in each material – called an “alu-loader.” This will let you see how aluminium performs against steel when equally loaded.

Offshore technology experts from Hydro will be available at the stand to answer your questions.

Hydro manufactures aluminium solutions used in offshore platforms and structures, as well as workboats. The company also delivers lightweight solutions for wind energy installations.

Morning workshop with Marine Aluminium

Hydro also invites you to participate in an educational work session that focuses on the cost-saving potential and other benefits that aluminium can bring to the offshore industry. We are co-hosting the event together with Norwegian Energy Partners and Marine Aluminium.

The two-hour work session begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 3, which is the final day of OTC 2018. It takes place at Norway House on 3410 West Dallas Street – about 15 minutes from NRG Park.

You will learn about aluminium alloys, dies, the extrusion process, application design, aluminium vs. steel structures, static and dynamic properties, fire protection, and joining technologies such as friction stir welding.

And a possible government visit

If you happen to be visiting Hydro’s OTC 2018 stand on Tuesday, May 1, then you may have an opportunity to see Norway’s Deputy Minister of Energy, Oil and Gas. Ingvil Smines Tybring-Gjedde says she will visit the Norwegian Pavilion together with the Petroleum Safety Authority and the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate.
