German multi-beam echo sounding system to be used for seabed mapping in China

German hydrographic systems manufacturer wins contract in China
This is the third HYDROSWEEP multi-beam echo sounder to be used in China

Atlas Hydrographic, a German manufacturer of hydrographic systems, has won a contract from the State Oceanographic Administration (SOA) in China for the supply of its multi-beam echo sounder, the company announced on Tuesday.

As part of the contract, the SOA institute in Xiamen will equip one of its vessels with the ATLAS HYDROSWEEP MD/50 multi-beam echo sounding system to conduct surveying projects in Chinese waters in depths down to 2,000 m.

The ATLAS HYDROSWEEP MD/50 is ideally suited for seabed mapping in mid and shallow waters based on a sonar frequency range between 52 kHz to 62 kHz. The system provides bathymetric depth information from approximately 5 metres to over 2,500 m, along with side scan data and backscatter data for seabed classification.

In addition, the ATLAS HYDROSWEEP MD/50 boasts a unique 4x multi-ping feature. In this operation mode up to four swaths can be generated simultaneously per ping using frequency modulation in order to increase the data density along track.

System delivery is slated for March 2014 and the sea acceptance trials will be conducted soon after. According to the German company, this is the third HYDROSWEEP multi-beam echo sounder to be used in China.
