CGG announced on Tuesday that it has successfully completed a multi-client high-resolution airborne magnetic gradiometer survey in the Eagle Ford shale play, Texas, US, which is expected to boost shale gas exploration and development in the area.

 

This magnetic gradiometer survey, performed by CGG’s Airborne group, includes over 12,000 line miles of profile and covers DeWitt, Dimmit, Gonzales, Karnes, La Salle, Lavaca, Live Oak, McMullen, and Webb counties in South Texas. It is also adjacent to several other magnetic datasets available in CGG’s worldwide multi-client gravity & magnetic (GravMag) library.  Deliverables from the survey will be available by the end of 2013.

 

The magnetic data will assist shale exploration and development companies by detecting changes in magnetite content in the sedimentary section and hence allowing the mapping of basement and sedimentary anomalies, faults and structures. The data will also be useful for Measurement While Drilling (MWD) geosteering applications for development wells utilizing CGG’s GravMag Solutions’ MagCUBE technology where the local magnetic reference field is computed from the aeromagnetic data and utilized in real time by drilling engineers to improve wellbore placement accuracy.
