Rosneft maintains Arctic exploration momentum with new science initiative

Member of the Rosneft board of directors and the Russian president's special envoy for international cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic, Artur Chilingarov, took part in a meeting of the Arctic Council in the city of Naryan-Mar to discuss relevant problems of sustainable development and the organisation of safety on polar territories

Chilingarov announced that Rosneft and the Russian Geographical Society have started elaboration of a complex programme on Arctic scientific development and are planning to engage leading Russian specialists to participate in the initiative.

“In June we have already held a round table in the Arctic Research and Design Centre (a joint venture of Rosneft and ExxonMobil). We decided to develop an interdisciplinary Arctic programme and entrust its elaboration to best specialists,” said Chilingarov.

“Rosneft works closely with scientific community, as efficient and safe shelf development is impossible without large-scale complex researches. We also hope that our initiative will be supported by governmental agencies and we count on broad international cooperation.”

After the meeting with the representatives of the Arctic Council member states Chilingarov took part in the ceremony of awarding the victors of "Discover the Arctic - 2014" project idea contest.

The Arctic Council is made up of member states, observer states and representatives of the scientific community under the aegis of the Russian Security Council.
