Scientists have discussed the possibility of setting-up a special scientific, interdisciplinary programme for complex research of the Arctic regions.

The special representative of Russian president on international cooperation in Arctic and Antarctic and member of Rosneft board of directors, Artur Chilingarov, acted as the round table’s moderator.

“Complex scientific research and Russian Arctic development are impossible without the collaboration of business, government and social institutes,” said Chilingarov. “I am happy to make a point that Rosneft pays special attention to the issue.”

The meeting was attended by Russia’s leading scientists engaged in Arctic research – oceanologists, biologists, geologists, geographers and ecologists.

The mix of scientific and technical specialists discussed the need to develop an approach to Arctic exploitation that recognises the region’s value as a source of hydrocarbons whilst balancing the considerations of environmental concern.
