The fire on the Abkatun Alpha platform that began yesterday morning has now been extinguished, according to operator Pemex.

Four workers died as a result of the incident. One has been identified as a Pemex employee, one as a contractor for the oil services company Cotemar, whilst two have yet to identified.

The Abkatun Alpha platform is located in the Bay of Campeche and required the evacuation of 301 workers.

Sixteen workers were reported injured, four of them work for Pemex and 12 for the service contractors.

The fire did not cause a major oil spill into the sea given that there was only a seepage which is being taken care of by a specialised vessel, according to Pemex.

Pemex CEO Emilio Lozoya said that the incident will have a minimal impact on production since this is a processing rather than production platform.
