Petrobras cancels order for 5 drilling units from Ocean Rig

Petrobras scrapes order for 5 pre-salt rigs
Ocean Rig owns and operates 6 drilling units, which include 2 drilling rigs and 4 drill ships

Brazil’s state-owned oil giant Petrobras has cancelled an order with Norwegian drilling contractor Ocean Rig Group for five drilling rigs capable of drilling in up to 3,000 metres of water.

The company said the decision was based on the reduction of future needs for drilling, due to a fewer number of wells expected to be drilled in the pre-salt Santos Basin, relating to a higher productivity gained through the project wells in that area.

Ocean Rig owns and operates 6 drilling units, the 2 drilling rigs Leiv Eiriksson and Eirik Raude and the 4 drill ships Ocean Rig Corcovado, Ocean Rig Olympia, Ocean Rig Poseidon and Ocean Rig Mykonos.

All 6 units are constructed for ultra deep waters and harsh environments. In addition it has 3 ultra deep water drillships under construction, capable of operating in 12,000 feet water depth.
